Just to stereotype- when my hubs leaves for a trip, he leaves with a cheery wave and a promise of an arrival phone call.

When I leave, it’s after two days of angst, planning, laundry, checklists, schedules, and notarized documents.

What’s up with THAT?

Actually, I know. Mom’s the institutional memory of a household, and when we’re heading out, a data dump is necessary first. Then, and only then, do things have ANY chance of running smoothly.

Oh, sure, YOU may be ready for some barbeque, long Saturdays by the pool, and the never ending glare of the sun: but how about your house? When it’s time for that first trip to the beach, how fast can you dig out your buckets, water shoes, and shovels?

Topicsmental health, organization, peaceful living, to do lists

As moms we make constant to-do lists, always jotting down or typing out the many things going through our heads each day that we don't want to forget. Sometimes the crossing off of items can bring me a little sanity, while other times seeing the lists pile up and up can do the opposite.  Calgon anyone?  I knew when the Post-it notes and the to-do's in my email had gotten out of control that my mental health was the next to go.  I needed a solution that was more than just organization or efficiency, I wanted to make it interesting and something maybe even nice to look at.

I was recently sent the It’s All Too Much DVD with Peter Walsh to review.  Over the weekend while the kids were gone I put it in and enjoyed all his tips.  I love reading new organization ideas and enjoy learning anything that helps make life a little easier.  Being a single mom of three kids it’s hard to keep a house organized but on the flip side it drives me crazy to live in chaos.

Boon is one of my favorite modern design brands for kids, especially for babies and tots. Boon Inc.’s frog bathroom storage is already a modern classic and their colorful high chair (now also in pink!) is seen in parenting magazines and in TV commercials. One of my family’s favorites is their stuffed animal bag, a great storage solution for all of those stuffed animals - and you can actually sit on it!

One of the tips that was emphasized during both Office Max webcasts I attended (about organizing your home office and helping kids organize for back-to-school) is to color code your calendar, files, etc. so that each family member has their own color and everything can be easily filed or found by its color.

JuiceBoxJungle has a funny show (see my sidebar) about Losing It that helps you feel better about yourself as a parent and remember to enjoy those crazy times as well as the calm ones. What better time to remind ourselves of this than the beginning of the busy new school year. Cookie Magazine and the PTA are debuting School Year’s Eve this year to celebrate the start of the new school year and education by encouraging party-throwing and resolution making.
