It’s almost time to stop the lazy days of sleeping in and get back to the business of routine and education. (Yeah, right, like our kids EVER let us sleep in.)

I’m a firm believer in beating the heat by refusing to participate in it. Sometimes, a little air conditioning goes a long way. I live in Maryland. From June to mid-September, it’s a semi-tropical swampland. There are bugs and mosquitoes, and most of all the wet blanket of heat that makes each dash to the minivan feel like a steam-bath.

So during what I think of as the “Carseat Buckle Burning Months”, my style is less a graceful coexistence with the heat and more of a starlet being chased by the paparazzi sprint away from it. Here’s a few of our top hits:

Just to stereotype- when my hubs leaves for a trip, he leaves with a cheery wave and a promise of an arrival phone call.

When I leave, it’s after two days of angst, planning, laundry, checklists, schedules, and notarized documents.

What’s up with THAT?

Actually, I know. Mom’s the institutional memory of a household, and when we’re heading out, a data dump is necessary first. Then, and only then, do things have ANY chance of running smoothly.

Oh, sure, YOU may be ready for some barbeque, long Saturdays by the pool, and the never ending glare of the sun: but how about your house? When it’s time for that first trip to the beach, how fast can you dig out your buckets, water shoes, and shovels?

Ahhhh, Spring!  Nature’s reminder of the circle of life!  Warmer temps, budding plants, baby animals – what’s NOT to love about Spring?

I love the energy I get during this season. No matter how many Springs I’ve experienced, the sweet sunshine never fails to bring a smile to my face, a bounce to my step and the urge to get outside…before Summer brings the heat and humidity.  I feel like a kid again, and try to spend as much time as possible in nature with my own brood to share the joy of “Spring Things” I remember from my childhood.  For instance:

From first glance at those pink lines, we strive to give our kids every possible advantage and competitive edge. We take the vitamins, do the pre-natal Yoga, and hang those black and white mobiles over newborn cribs to fire up those little neurons.

After all, who doesn’t want their offspring well equipped to grab the world by the tail? But what if the most powerful arrow needed in a child’s quiver is a simple confidence that he or she can hit the bull’s eye?

Do you ever feel like you are being watched? Now, I don’t mean in the creepy, stalkerish way. Instead, I guess I mean… observed.

As a mom, it’s easy to feel like every thing I do, the moment I step in to a public place with my children, is being taken in and even scrutinized. I know this to be true partly by the looks and stares I see people throw our way, sometimes not so inconspicuously. Perhaps I am overly sensitive to this fact.

Or, perhaps not.

I’ve seen a trend in the last 10 years that I’m not sure how I feel about; it’s the death of independence in kids and teens.

While on one hand, I’m glad that parents are taking more active roles in helping their kids make good decisions. On the other hand, I’m very disappointed to see more and more kids turn into young adults who don’t know how to make a decision for themselves or take action without the backing of their parents.

Turn off the TV, step away from the computer and engage in some frugal family fun. This is the time when I desire a “Yes, Mom” mentality. Being fully present in their lives is the greatest frugal family tip I can share.

After this last weekend, I can proudly say that I have planned and executed a total of 27 successful birthday parties for my six children! I can hardly believe it's true!

Not all of the 27 birthdays we have celebrated have been created equal, mind you. We have had birthday parties with jump houses, face painting, pinatas and even magic tricks. Some called for ice cream cakes. Others for giant cupcakes. I even made an elaborate sheet cake, with a pond full of frogs on lily-pads, for one such party. And one was a low-key get-together at our favorite pizza place.
