Breakfast From The Heart

The breakfasts my husband Bill makes to show his love and amuse me have always been private. Now that we have a book, Funny Food, with 365 of my breakfasts, our secret is out.

Valentine’s Day is a good time for me to reflect on the breakfasts because it’s the holiday when lovers go public with hearts and flowers.

Bill made these flowers for me, not for Valentine’s Day but on a day when we struggled over a long forgotten issue. But, I will not forget the fruit flowers Bill emailed to me at work. They lifted my spirits and made a delicious dessert that evening.

A typical morning:

Bill asks what I want for breakfast. I leave him alone in the kitchen with his imagination, and read the newspaper, quietly waiting for my surprise.

Bill gets into a very focused zone where his creativity flows and he goes into a meditative state. The psychologist, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, uses the term entering the “flow” state where one stands to the side of something and is in a new reality.

Bill doesn’t pre-plan but uses whatever ingredients we have in the kitchen.

I love Bill and I love the passion he can bring to a bowl of oatmeal.

Love my food hot:

On the days when I request hot oatmeal, scrambled eggs or pancakes it’s no problem for Bill. He’s an artist and can cook up a masterpiece in under 5 minutes.

.

I feel loved and nourished every day - not just on Valentine’s Day.
