Gluten-Free Super Bowl Food and Sloppy Joes Recipe

Social events, such as Super Bowl parties, can be challenging for people who avoid gluten. Sure, the Super Bowl is about football, but a party is always about more than just the big game. A party means plenty of food.  If you’re living gluten free you don’t have to miss out on the fun, but you do have to be prepared.

 

Here is a list of typical Super Bowl party foods you can eat, and a few to avoid.

 

Gluten-Free Party Foods


The following items are usually gluten free. Be sure to read the label and confirm that the particular item you are using is gluten free.


Also be careful to avoid cross contamination from nearby gluten-containing items.

  • Fresh vegetables
  • Many salad dressings and dips
  • Fresh fruit
  • Tortilla chips
  • Salsa
  • Hummus
  • Potato chips
  • Popcorn
  • Cheese
  • Potato skins


 

Party Foods to Avoid


This is not an exhaustive list, but here are a few common party foods which usually contain gluten. It doesn’t mean you can’t eat those things, but you will need to buy or make your own gluten-free versions. I’ve suggested some recipes…


 


Sloppy Joes are a delicious and crowd pleasing menu option for a Super Bowl party. You can make your own gluten-free hamburger buns, or serve it in a bowl with tortilla chips.

 


Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds ground beef (80% to 85% lean)

  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 2 cups chopped onion

  • 1 1/2 cups diced celery

  • 3 cloves minced garlic

  • 3 Tablespoons brown sugar

  • 2 Tablespoons gluten-free soy sauce

  • 2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar

  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup

  • 1/2 cup water plus more as needed


Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, sauté the ground beef until cooked through. Drain.
  2. Place the oil In the bottom of a large pot. Add the onion and celery and sauté until soft.
  3. Add the minced garlic and sauté one minute longer.
  4. Add the beef and remaining ingredients to the pot and stir well to combine.
  5. Cover and simmer at least 30 minutes, adding more water as necessary.
  6. Option: Heat in a slow cooker on low for 3 to 4 hours.
  7. Serve warm on gluten-free buns or with gluten-free chips.
