A Mother's "Intervention"

As a mother, I like to watch reality television shows in my free time that are just for me and my viewing pleasure. It isn't often that there is a reality show on TV that teaches a lesson, or shows you firsthand insight on the struggles of a family. I have been a long time fan of the A&E show "Intervention." This show gives me a healthy dose of the "reality" that I crave in a documentary style presentation.

I was unimaginably excited when I was given the chance to preview an upcoming episode of "Intervention" (airing Monday, August 2 at 9/8C) featuring a woman named Lorna. What drew me to this particular episode was the fact that Lorna use to be a dancer on the popular television show "Soul Train" as well as dancing for the Ike & Tina Turner show Revue that took place in Las Vegas. Not only was Lorna successful during her career, accomplishing such prestigious positions for A&M records, but she was also a mother and a wife.

"Intervention" often profiles a wide variety of people on their show, but I was drawn to this particular episode because Lorna's story could very well be the story of someone I knew, whether a friend or co-worker. It also could have been my story if I would have made a few different decisions in my life. A lot of families are touched everyday by the disease of alcoholism or drug addiction. Regardless of your status, this particular episode shows that even celebrities aren't above the pitfalls of addiction.

As a mom, this show made me feel very sad and I got really emotional while I was watching it. My sadness was not for Lorna, but for the three children that she left behind due to her drug addiction. It made me emotional because even after thirty years of drug addiction, her children will forever be emotionally scarred by the decisions that she chose to make.

I was upset watching this episode of "Intervention" because I saw that even as adults, Lorna's children could never fully live their lives because they were always worried about the adverse affects of Lorna's decisions.

This episode featuring Lorna airs on A&E Monday, August 2 9/8C and it is very worth the watch. The best thing about Intervention is that they give you an update at the end of each episode to let you know how the person in the documentary is doing currently. To find out what happens to Lorna, and her children, you'll have to tune in.
