YouCake, a brand new company specializing in edible personalized and custom photo cakes, provided my Kyle his very own photo cake for his 2nd birthday last month. As you can just design and create your photo topping online by uploading your own pictures, this makes the entire process very easy.
YouCake designs rectangle, round, or square cake toppers, cupcake toppers, and even frosted sugar toppers. I loved our photo cake, but I really like the idea of seeing my kids mini-sized on 50+ cupcakes so I think next year I’ll go for the cupcake toppers! The more I’ve cruised around the YouCake website; I’ve found some very cool designs using company logos on cupcakes or cookies for parties. I also love the idea of custom cookies with adorable icon toppers for a wedding or baby shower theme.
You’ll get to approve your proof and then they’ll ship it to you in the mail for to either apply it yourself to a homemade or store bought cake or take it to a bakery for them to apply it for you. Their directions make the application sound very easy, but as I’m no Martha Stewart and tend to pay others to do services for me when possible, I opted to buy a cake at my local ACME grocery store and requested the bakery department apply my topper for me. For the crafty types, you can apply it and then surround the topper with piping. I asked ACME to pipe our rectangle cake with a bright orange to coordinate with the sun hat Kyle was wearing in his beach photo from last summer.
Pricing varies based on number of photos included and size of cake requested. My particular topper would cost $35 but come February, prices will drop dramatically as the customer can opt to control 100% of their design and self approve proofs. This will make YouCake photo toppers even more popular and accessible as this awesome service will enable people to bake their own cakes or cupcakes on a budget, but still create a more elaborate bakery style topping
