A Playhouse to Call their Own

This past weekend my kids received a dream gift - a little playhouse to call their own. A cedar cottage with windows and even a real door - complete with hinges. The kids are in heaven.

It might not be one of those glitzy $23,000 Victorian Playhouse or the $18,000 dream Pirate Ship playhouse we've all read about in Cookie Magazine, or even one of the fancy cottages in the $1500 -$5000 price range, but it's all they need.

The pricetag on our cedar cottage made by Backyard Discovery was a very affordable $399. Here's a video tour of their new pad.

Now since this $399 for a Cedar Cottage is still a big ticket item and substantially cheaper than the above mentioned playhouses you are probably wondering why oh why was this playhouse only $399. Well, because we built it from a box!!! Literally bit by bit and board by board. Let's talk pros and cons on the kids' new outdoor "crib" so to speak:

Pros:

Price, Adorable, Charming, Tons of fun, All Cedar, Looks great in your yard

Cons:

Time consuming to build and being handy is a requirement. This is not a project Mom could have done on her own – or at least this Mom would never attempt it :). Also, the small bench that came with it (to sit outside the cottage) is just too small and unstable for us to use safely with the kids. No big deal, as it is an “extra” element that came with the playhouse,  but don’t expect it to be very functional. Again, my husband spent almost 8 hours building it. The power drill/screwdiver tool thing is essential. The instructions were fabulous he said, but they also suggested 2 skilled laborers would need 6-8 hours to get the job done so please expect to spend some time putting your new home together!
