Photography Books that should be on every Photographer's Bookshelf
Photography seems to be a hot topic lately as more families are opting for the bigger DSLR cameras instead of the point and shoot variety. If you are interested in becoming a "working" photographer or even if you just want to capture great moments of your kids, you should check out some of these great photography books.
"Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson
Whenever I ask a photographer what books they recommend, this book is always on the top of their list. Understanding Exposure not only explains the basics in an easy to follow manner, but you will also learn how to expose for front-lit, back-lit, side-lit situations, for overcast skies, macro photography, motion and stationary objects. Bryan will explain how to expose for bright scenes such as snow and dark scenes for night photography as well. You name it he covers it! "Understanding Exposure" is a popular and essential hand-book for anyone who is interested in truly understanding how their camera works and how to get the perfect exposure every time.
Bryan Peterson is the author of the best-selling Learning to See Creatively and writes a photography column "Picture Points," for Popular Photography Magazine. His many photographic awards include the Communication Arts Photography Annual (eight times), Print Magazine's Design Annual (four times), and the New York Art Directors Gold Award. "Understanding Shutter Speed" by Bryan Peterson
Another popular book by Bryan Peterson, "Understanding Shutter Speed," is another must read for anyone interested in learning more about photography. Peterson shows the reader how to use the correct shutter speed for a variety of situations. He'll explain how to freeze the motion of a waterfall or get the stunning blur of a race car speeding along the tracks.
"The Better Photo Guide to Photographing Children" by Jim Miotke
I've always admired a great photograph of a child. Getting them to pose or finding them in the right moment at the right time is a challenge. This book shows photographers how to get great shots of children of all ages, even your own, under any conditions. Jim will show you how to use light, composition and what's available to you to campture those amazing action shots or beautiful candid shots. This books is not only helpful for future portrait photographers but its great for the photography mom who just wants to create a great scrapbook for the kids.

"Portrait and Candid Photography: Photo Whorkbook" by Erin Manning
This was one of my very first photography books. "Portrait and Candid Photography" is a great read for anyone interested in taking great "people pictures." I've never been a fan of staged "school" pictures and have always gone for the candid shots. Erin shares her secret in capturing those great moments. The key is to observe your subjects and connect with them. You will learn how to work with lighting, location, angle, composition, environment and a host of other variables that challenge photographers. She discusses the challenges of working with babies and groups. You will be able to test your skills by completing several assignments at the end of each chapter.
Erin Manning has been fascinated with the people in photographs since she was seven. A professional photographer, she has done commercial, stock, and portrait work and is known for her teaching skill. HGTV and DIY Network viewers know Erin as the host of The Whole Picture.
