Create Professional Quality Images at Home

Being a working mom I’ve developed this unrelenting guilt, a gut feeling that I am missing out on something amazing my kid just discovered and/or accomplished while I sit in my cubicle. Having my second child only catapulted the guilt to indescribable levels, which is one of the reasons why I started taking so many pictures . I wanted to make sure I captured every emotion and expression from my children so I can cherish them forever. And when I’m feeling a little guilty I can just jump on the flickr gallery and glance through the pictures.

Because those special moments of childhood don’t always happen in the best lighting conditions, I thought it would be a good idea to invest in some lighting equipment. In my search I came across a Home Studio Lighting Kit made by Westcott and they were kind enough to send me a lighting kit to review.

About the Home Studio Light Kit

The Home Studio Lighting Kit contains everything you need to obtain professional quality images while in the comfort of your own home. The kit contains 2 daylight-balanced lights, collapsible soft boxes, and two stands all compact enough for traveling. In addition, the kit comes with an Educational DVD hosted by Erin Manning. In the DVD she walks you through the set up and usage of you kit, along with tips on how to get creative with you lighting.

It only took a few minutes to unpack everything and get the lighting kit set up; the stands are light weight which makes them perfect to move around the house or to take on location. The lamps stay cool so I felt comfortable using them around my two kids.

I initially tested the lights in my “studio” with a backdrop and my daughter as the model. The stands make it very easy to move the lights up and down or any direction you need to. My daughter was even helping me “decide” where they should go. Here is a sample shot taken using the Home Lighting Kit in a mini studio environment.

Next I decided to take the lights into my daughter’s room. I placed the two lights across from each other at the head of her bed to avoid shadows and sat both my kids against the headboard. My kids were being a little silly so I didn’t get the best shots but the lighting is better. Normally my daughter’s room is very dark so I always had to use my flash in her room, but didn’t need to with the lighting kit set up.
